The process of my work is very intuitive rather than planned. Starting with pastel lines on the paper and then trying to “read” what it tells me. As I repeatedly layer paint washes and pastel/pencil lines, the images gradually begin to take shape. Each work takes several weeks to complete, and sometimes more than a month. Because of this, I usually work on three or four pieces simultaneously. While the paint is drying on one, I continue the process on another.

My recent works are created on watercolour paper, which can withstand the many layers of paint wash – an integral part of my process. Using acrylic paint, oil and soft pastels, and colouring pencils I build up the different patterns and shades in my paintings.

Tropicalism

(*) Tropicalism (or Tropicália) is a Brazilian artistic and cultural movement from the late 1960’s that blended traditional genres (especially in music) with foreign art styles—mainly North American and British. It also served as political resistance against the military dictatorship. Here, I use the term to evoke the colours, shapes, nature, and freedom of my roots while engaging with Nordic influences.

In this collection the intention is not to recreate the Tropicália movement, but to carry its spirit of creative resistance into our present moment. When I place the roots of “tropical” art in a new context, I bring together my Brazilian heritage and my life in Finland. This process has helped me understand my identity and sense of belonging, which allowed me to embrace and celebrate the many influences that have made (and still make) me who I am as person and artist.

TENDER CONTEMPLATION – 2024 COLLECTION

A pastel drawing featuring vibrant flowers and fruits, including pink and yellow blooms, with the title 'TENDER CONTEMPLATION' and artist's name 'Claudia Vanjotie' prominently displayed.

Tender Contemplation is a collection of works inspired by colours, shapes, flowers, leaves, birds in soft and oil pastels, colouring pencils, watercolour, collage, and acrylic paint. It portrays the beauty of simple things. The intention in each work is to elevate the spirit and take the spectator to that cozy time and place in memory, like a childhood moment when looking at grandma’s table with fresh-cut flowers or listening to a bird chirping on the fence on a calm rainy day.
